There are episodes about his childhood, work and play in Baltimore, about life as a city boy in the summers on a farm in Frederick, Maryland, and stories about how he aqualifieda to become a submarine sailor. His boat, the USS Besugo 321, left New London, Connecticut, down through the Panama Canal, stopped at Pearl Harbor and went out to the South Pacific to engage the enemy. That started the test of faith. There were white knuckle times diving deep and experiencing the explosions of 198 depth charges. Heas included humorous accounts about shore leaves in Australia for their well-deserved rest, recreation and romance. And there was a mascot on board during all this time, a dog named aSugiea whom they all agreed was the smartest sailor on board.
